Breacher steps up to Group company at Sandown
William Muir will look for a firmer indication of Breacher’s potential when the Cracksman colt heads to Sandown for Saturday’s BetMGM Solario Stakes. The juvenile, who won on debut at Salisbury in late June, makes a quick return at Group Three level after missing a planned comeback because of an unsatisfactory blood test.
Early promise and cautious progression
Muir has previously drawn comparisons between Breacher’s debut and the early form shown by Pyledriver, a high-class performer who began his career at Salisbury. Those early assessments were based on a strong first outing, but Breacher has not raced since and the trainer has emphasised the need for the colt to confirm that promise as he tackles a more competitive assignment.
Connections had intended to target the listed Stonehenge Stakes over a mile at Salisbury for the colt’s next start, but Breacher was withdrawn after the blood test issue. He is now reported to have recovered and is declared for the seven-furlong Solario, with Muir noting that the horse possesses the speed to be effective over the shorter trip if required.
Ground and conditions under consideration
Muir is keeping an eye on the forecast ahead of Sandown, expressing a preference for quicker underfoot conditions given Breacher’s pedigree. While Cracksman and his sire-line have been associated with horses who handle cut in the ground, Muir pointed to the colt’s damline as favouring faster going and admitted he would be reluctant to race him on soft or heavy turf.
Solario field and context
Ten juveniles are declared for the Solario, a race with a notable roll call of past winners that includes Raven’s Pass, Kingman and Masar. The line-up features a mixture of promising newcomers and horses that have already shown form in maidens, with Roger Varian’s Rock Montreal and the Crisfords’ Sonic Angel among the principals in what shapes up to be a competitive renewal.
For Muir and his small partnership with Chris Grassick, the contest represents a useful benchmark. Rather than setting lofty expectations, the plan is to assess how Breacher performs against stronger opposition and to map out the colt’s path thereafter.
Supporting cast on the Sandown card
The other Group Three on the card is the BetMGM Atalanta Stakes. That fillies’ sprint has attracted a quality field, including Sir Mark Prescott’s Moon Target, who drops back in class after finishing fourth in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and third in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville.
Cheveley Park Stud will run a pair, with John and Thady Gosden entering So Regal, returning from a break since finishing second at York’s Dante Festival in May. Ralph Beckett’s unbeaten Secret Of Life and the returning Calendar Girl, trained by Owen Burrows, add further depth to the line-up.
