THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL AT DONCASTER

Racegoers from all over the UK descend on Yorkshire each year for the Doncaster St Leger to capture a taste of the atmosphere at this unique 4-day horse racing festival; the showpiece ‘jewel in the crown’ of Yorkshire racing.

The flagship race on the final day of the Doncaster St Leger festival is the famous St Leger race first run in 1776 and the final race in the UK’s ‘Triple Crown’; the Newmarket 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger.

The Doncaster St Leger meeting also features a number of top-class supporting races on each of day race meeting; highlights being the DFS Park Hill Stakes on Ladies’ Day, the Doncaster Cup on Friday and the Portland Handicap on Saturday.

Don’t race home after the last race! This delightful festival blends history with racing excitement on each of the 4-days of the St Leger meeting, plus a superb programme of live entertainment after racing ends on each day.

Doncaster St Leger Legends Day

DAY 1 LEGER LEGENDS DAY

The St Leger Festival kicks off with retired racing celebrities racing in the Leger Legends Race, benefiting 2 Yorkshire charities; the Northern Racing College & Jack Berry House rehabilitation facility for injured jockeys. First run in 2010, the race is increasingly popular, with jockeys like Sea The Stars rider Mick Kinane and leading lady jockey Julie Krone winning the race previously. In 2013 dual Grand National-winning jockey Carl Llewellyn, plus several (as yet secret) new jockeys compete in the Leger Legend.

Doncaster St Leger Ladies Day

DAY 2 LADIES DAY

Day 2 is South Yorkshire’s biggest social occasion. The Doncaster Racecourse Grandstand is filled with stylish ladies in fascinators hoping to win the Best Dressed Lady prize. The winner goes on to represent Doncaster Racecourse in Yorkshire’s Best Dressed Lady 2013 final in October. The feature race is the Park Hill Stakes for fillies & mares; won last year by Wild Coco, trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil. Third in that race was the Queen’s horse Estimate, that went on to win the Ascot Gold Cup in 2013.

Doncaster Cup Day

DAY 3 DONCASTER CUP

Featuring the Doncaster Cup (a final leg of the ‘stayers’ Triple Crown following the Ascot Gold Cup & Goodwood Cup) the Queen’s horse Estimate hopes to add this race to her Ascot win. Friday also features the Flying Childers Stakes & May Hill Stakes, plus the Mallard Stakes. On the 90th anniversary of the world-famous Flying Scotsman emerging from Doncaster Works, the Flying Scotsman Stakes (won by Frankel in 2010) is now upgraded & re-named in honour of the iconic steam engine.

DAY 4 ST LEGER DAY

St Leger Day is the highlight of the Festival, featuring top-class races: the Champagne Stakes and ultra-competitive Portland Handicap sprint. The showpiece race; the St Leger, is the last of the 5 most prestigious Classic races in the UK Flat racing calendar and final leg of the British ‘Triple Crown’, last won in 1970 by Nijinsky. With a record £600,000 prize-fund the race attracts the best horses, with a glittering roll of honour including some of the most acclaimed horses in history.

Home to 2 of the world’s oldest races, the Doncaster Cup first run in 1766 and the St Leger inaugurated 10 years later and the first Classic ever run, the racecourse at Town Moor in the heart of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, has been drawing crowds for centuries.

Convenient for nearby Sheffield and Leeds, with links to the A1, M1, M18 and M62, Doncaster Racecourse is also easily accessible for most areas of the UK.

Families are welcome and accompanied children under 18 enter FREE with free entertainment on race-days.

Doncaster Racecourse is the busiest turf racecourse in the UK, hosting a mixture of 35 National Hunt and Flat race meetings each year, including the oldest Classic, the St. Leger Festival.

FLAT COURSE: Left-hand almost perfectly flat track with a run-in of just over 4f. High numbers best on the straight course.

JUMPS COURSE: Left-hand pear shaped track almost perfectly flat with a run-in of just over 240yds. Eleven very easy fences and seven hurdles per circuit.
