Juddmonte send a strong hand to York after Ascot success

Juddmonte have confirmed a sizeable team for next week’s Sky Bet Ebor Festival at York, with Group One winners and potential top-level contenders among their entries. The yard’s two highest-profile declarations include Kalpana, fresh from victory in a flagship Ascot contest, and Item, who steps back up to the highest class for the Juddmonte International.

Kalpana to take in the Yorkshire Oaks after Ascot

Kalpana arrives at York on the back of a career-best performance in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. With the filly showing she remains in form after that success, the connections have opted to run her in the Group One Legends’ Yorkshire Oaks as part of a campaign that keeps major autumn targets—such as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Fillies & Mares contest—within reach.

Juddmonte’s team view the timing and nature of York’s test as a suitable stepping stone for a filly who has thrived on competitive racing. The decision reflects a long-term plan to keep Kalpana active while she is maintaining form, mirroring previous campaigns in which top fillies have used high-profile summer targets as preparation for the autumn classics.

Item heads to the Juddmonte International

Item is entered for the Juddmonte International on the opening day of the Ebor Festival, stepping up to Group One company for a second time. The colt is unbeaten over ten furlongs but has also suggested he stays further on testing ground; connections will be watching the conditions closely at York to assess how he handles a slightly longer trip on quicker going.

While Item carries Juddmonte’s colours into one of the season’s toughest middle-distance renewals, the stable acknowledge the race will be deep, with leading older and three-year-old rivals expected to provide a stern examination of his progress.

Juddmonte also eyeing juvenile and mile targets

On the same Thursday card, Juddmonte anticipate a two-pronged challenge in the Sky Bet Lowther, with two fillies under consideration. One has had a couple of runs below the stable’s expectations but worked well returning to the gallops, while the other bolstered her credentials with a recent success and has come out of that race in good order. The stable are prepared to take a chance with both if they remain in the right form.

Qirat, a previous winner at the highest level, is being considered for the Sky Bet City of York Stakes over the same course and distance. The gelding registered a comeback success in the Criterion Stakes at Goodwood and, provided he is fit and well, is likely to contest the York listed feature.

Targets and fitness guiding entries

Across the Juddmonte string the overriding considerations for York entries are recent form, suitability of the track and forward plans for the autumn. Several horses are being kept active on that basis, with the festival offering both a prestigious platform and a useful gauge for those with loftier aims later in the season.

There is growing confidence within the yard about a couple of other contenders aimed at the Ebor itself, particularly one who ran well on Goodwood’s July course and is expected to improve for the run. Such late-developing types could provide interesting opposition in York’s staying contests if their preparation continues to progress.

What to expect at York

The Ebor Festival frequently attracts strong international and domestic contenders and Juddmonte’s multiple entries underline the quality and depth of the planning behind the stable’s summer and autumn campaigns. Racegoers at York can expect to see both established Group One performers and up-and-coming prospects from the operation during the week.

Note:The festival remains subject to final declarations and race-day confirmations. Connections will make their final decisions based on fitness, ground and the health of each individual horse.
