Goodwood selections Tuesday 28th July
Five Glorious days at Goodwood begin on Tuesday with the Goodwood Cup the undoubted highlight. A virtual re-run of the Ascot version, I think an each-way alternative might be in order given the hard race the first two at the Royal meeting had and given a dead eight runners. However the best bet might come in the opener. High Fibre was a winner for us in the previous column last week (7/2).
Goodwood 1.50: Twisting Physics
The traditional meeting opener, a 10f handicap can go to the unfancied bottom weight TWISTING PHYSICS.
Although he made all to win over 7f at Newbury last season on his final start of 2025, he has improved again for a step up in distance this term. He has improved with each run, mirroring the form of trainer Oliver Cole, whose stable had been badly out of form in the spring.
Often a front-runner, I would be quite happy to see him take a lead, but race handily from a useful low draw. Prominent racers usually do well in this race, especially on fast ground, as they do at Windsor where he was always close up, determinedly holding off Seagolazo. Promising apprentice Ashley Lewis takes off 5lbs to ensure he gets an even bigger weight pull over the others.
Goodwood 3.35: Rahiebb
Clearly a non stayer in the Ascot Gold Cup, RAHIEBB will have to go some to peg back Scandinavia and Trawlerman from that race. However 2m4f was clearly too far for the selection, whilst the front two had very hard races in their duel up the straight. As such an each-way option on Roger Varian’s charge seems in order.
Rahiebb got to within a neck of Scandinavia in the St Leger last season and I am sure he will have no issue staying 2m on a sharp track and on fast ground like today. He was doing all his best work at the finish when landing the Yorkshire Cup in May at York and this horse has the right blend of speed and endurance for a race like this.
Varian is keeping the faith with his colt and in a race where there is currently each-way three places, he looks the obvious one to at least make the frame – and be in a place to take advantage of either or both of the two favourites slip up.
