Ruler of the World beats Dawn Approach to win the Epsom Derby 2013
Watched by the Queen, Aidan O’Brien-trained Ruler of the World, rated at odds of 7/1, beat his rivals to win the Epsom Derby 2013.
Pre-race favorite, Godolphin-owned Dawn Approach, disappointed by failing to add the Derby to his triumph in the 2,000 Guineas classic in May and dashing hopes that he would become the 38th horse to win the first two legs of English racing’s Triple Crown. After briefly hitting the front at the mile marker, Dawn Approach faded badly and eventually finished second last.
Jockey Ryan Moore claimed the ride on Ruler of the World when Joseph O’Brien, Ballydoyle’s stable jockey and son of the trainer, opted to ride Battle of Marengo.
Ryan’s faith in the chestnut colt Ruler of the World was rewarded as he stormed home by 1.5 lengths from Libertarian, winner of last month’s Dante Stakes. Galileo Rock was 3rd and with Battle of Marengo came 4th.
