Giant Sequoia grinds out Curragh success in Futurity

Aidan O’Brien’s Giant Sequoia had to battle for the Coolmore Stud City Of Troy Tom Cooper Irish EBF Futurity Stakes at the Curragh, eventually prevailing by half a length to maintain his standing as an early favourite for next year’s Derby at Epsom.

Close finish between stablemates

Under Wayne Lordan, the Frankel colt tracked the pace before mounting his challenge between two furlongs out. He then engaged in a prolonged duel with stablemate Florida Bay, who had set the early fractions after taking over from the Chesham Stakes winner Nola Soul. Giant Sequoia was driven out to secure the seven-furlong Group Two by the narrowest of margins.

Race shape and form

Florida Bay led for much of the contest having moved to the front from Nola Soul, with Giant Sequoia sitting close behind in a prominent third. Green Dreamer, Nail House and City of Dubai also raced prominently, content to track the leaders and allow the pair to contest the finish. The race developed into a test of stamina and determination in the closing stages, with Giant Sequoia showing the necessary persistence to prevail.

Implications for the spring classics

The victory keeps Giant Sequoia prominent on ante-post lists for the major three-year-old targets. He remains at the head of early Derby betting, with Coral offering 12-1 from 16-1, and he is also noted in Guineas markets, with Paddy Power quoted at 16-1 from 20-1 for the 2000 Guineas.

Trainer’s assessment

O’Brien, celebrating his 19th Futurity success, described the colt as a work in progress who benefited from the experience of a proper pace. He observed that Giant Sequoia had to contend with close pressure early on and learned from the encounter. The trainer indicated a possibility of the colt returning to the Curragh for the National Stakes later in the season.

What the performance tells us

The Futurity provided a valuable piece of form for Giant Sequoia. Winning a Group Two at seven furlongs under a sustained drive suggests the colt possesses both tactical speed and the will to battle — attributes that are often looked for in horses being considered for the Derby trail.

That said, the race also highlighted areas for development. The prolonged head-to-head with Florida Bay showed the colt had to be asked for his effort earlier than ideal, a factor connections will weigh when mapping out his remainder of the campaign. Returning to the Curragh for a step up in trip would be a logical progression if the National Stakes is targeted.

Jockey and stable form

Wayne Lordan’s positive ride ensured Giant Sequoia maintained position through the contest and produced him at the decisive moment. For O’Brien’s operation, another Futurity success underlines the trainer’s continued dominance with juveniles at the Curragh and keeps the yard firmly in focus as the season moves towards autumn and next spring’s classic targets.

  • Race: Coolmore Stud City Of Troy Tom Cooper Irish EBF Futurity Stakes (Group 2), Curragh
  • Distance: 7 furlongs
  • Winner: Giant Sequoia (Aidan O’Brien / Wayne Lordan)
  • Close second: Florida Bay (stablemate)

With the Futurity box ticked, attention will now turn to where connections send Giant Sequoia next and how his form translates as he steps up in trip and takes the next steps towards the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby campaigns.
