Craft can steer path to victory

Doncaster selections Thursday 9th September

It is Ladies Day at Doncaster on Thursday and that translates to the action on the track as well. My two selections cover the opening contest which is for lady jockeys only, and the Park Hill Stakes for fillies and mares. We had a perfect start to the meeting with both selections winning on Wednesday, Anmaat (advised 9/2) and Wentworth Falls (advised 5/1).

Doncaster 1.10: Call Me Ginger

Second over course and distance at this meeting last year, on his only previous visit to Doncaster, CALL ME GINGER can go one place better today off the back of a first recent win of 2021 at Hamilton last month.

Probably at his best on fast ground, Call Me Ginger looks one of those horses who are best delivered late and he really stepped up at Hamilton where the stiff final furlong really played to his strengths. Doncaster also lends itself well to hold up horses, hence his fine run in a better race here last season.

Whilst he is up 4lbs for that last win, Amie Waugh, who turned apprentice only this week, takes off 5lbs herself and so she is effectively 8lbs lower than for that fine previous run here at last year’s Leger meeting. I prefer him to favourite Lord P who is up 21lbs in effect for winning two weak amateur riders races recently.

Doncaster 3.15: Tribal Craft

Doncaster tends to bring out the best in stamina laden horses and in TRIBAL CRAFT we have a contender who looks guaranteed to stay every yard of this extended 14f.

A winner over 12f at Pontefract as a 3yo, Tribal Craft has been gradually stepping up in grade throughout her career and landed her first group race when winning comfortably over 14f at York in May (with today’s rival Urban Artist back in second). Since then she has finished off strongly to chase home the top class Wonderful Tonight at Glorious Goodwood.

She was only tenth in the Ebor last time out, but was given plenty to do and did not enjoy a trouble free passage in the straight. This smaller field will make it easier for David Probert to get a run. Any rain before race time would be appreciated as most if her best form has come with cut, but I think she can cope with faster ground, particularly on a track where finishing fast is often rewarded.

Recommended bets:

1pt each-way – Call Me Ginger – 1.10 Doncaster – 9/2 general

1pt each-way – Tribal Craft – 3.15 Doncaster – 17/2 William Hill, BetVictor, Betfred
