Magny Cours provided a timely reminder of her ability when taking the Coolmore Stud Little Big Bear Stakes (Group 3) at Cork, stepping back up after a disappointing run in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
The daughter of Awtaad, trained by Daniel McLoughlin and partnered by Ben Coen, produced a measured performance over seven furlongs to record a comfortable success for owners Ecurie Ama Zingteam. Sent off at 9/1, she travelled well under Coen before being switched to find clear running a furlong from home and quickened to lead inside the final furlong, ultimately scoring by two and a half lengths.
Dancing Saxon, priced 4/1, ran on for second, with Spinning Around (12/1) coming from the rear to snatch third by a head. The result represented Magny Cours’s first success on the track, following a debut disqualification and a string of close placed efforts in pattern company, including two runner-up finishes at Group 3 level and a second in France in the Prix Miesque.
Trainer upbeat on scope and trip
McLoughlin reported that the filly has strengthened and matured since earlier in the season and suggested seven furlongs may be her optimum trip. The trainer explained that connections had withdrawn her from the Matron Stakes and that plans will now be reviewed with this performance in mind.
