Chattering Classes strikes at the Curragh to claim Group 3 honours

Chattering Classes provided a notable late-season highlight for trainer Jessica Harrington and owner Valerie Cooper by taking the Group 3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Sent off at 16/1, the filly produced a strong finishing burst under Shane Foley to deny front-running The Good Wife close to the line and register her first victory.

Racing over seven furlongs, the contest featured a deep field of eleven juveniles. Chattering Classes had previously shown promise on her debut at the Curragh in early August and endured an unlucky outing at Thurles earlier in the month. On this occasion she raced towards the rear before delivering a sustained late run to lead in the final strides and prevail by around a length and a half.

Paddy Twomey’s The Good Wife, who had set the pace, was beaten only in the closing stages. Joseph O’Brien’s Blonde Over Blue, a long-odds contender, ran on to take third, while the market favourite Maire Rua finished well down the order.

Team delighted with performance

Connections were encouraged by the manner of the filly’s improvement. Harrington’s team had given the filly a light piece of work ahead of the race and reported that she had returned well from her recent outings. With the maiden tag removed in Group company, the filly can head into the winter on an upward trajectory.

Plans are tentative for the spring campaign but the Salsabil Stakes at Navan next April was mentioned as a possible target following this performance. There are no significant entries for the filly at present, and further decisions will be taken once the winter and early spring programmes are clearer.

Implications for the spring

  • Chattering Classes’ Group 3 success gives her a black-type credential to carry into her three-year-old season.
  • The performance underlined the potential for improvement after an inexperienced juvenile campaign and a short break.
  • Connections will assess options over middle distances early next year, with the Salsabil Stakes cited as one option among others.

The Staffordstown Stud Stakes has often provided pointers to promising fillies for the following season’s higher-grade targets, and Chattering Classes’ win adds her to the list of horses to watch as the winter unfolds. For Harrington and her team, the victory offers a timely boost and a platform from which to map out the filly’s three-year-old engagements.

Shane Foley’s ride was judged effective in timing the challenge, and the race overall highlighted the ever-present variables of juvenile racing: a filly that looked green on first appearances can progress rapidly with experience and measured handling.

Further entries and definite plans for Chattering Classes are expected to be confirmed in the coming months as connections consider appropriate targets and the 2027 spring programme takes shape.
