Longchamp selections – Sunday 6th October

Worth making the Longchamp Journey

Steve Hughes has two picks for Arc day at Longchamp

Perhaps the biggest day in the European racing calendar takes place on Sunday with the Arc meeting at Longchamp. It looks difficult to oppose the warm favourite Enable in the big race on her last day as a racehorse. Therefore I am looking at two of the supporting Group 1 races on the card for a better betting proposition.

Longchamp 4.30: Gold Vibe

His form figures tell you he is not the easiest to win with, but at huge odds, last year’s Abbaye runner-up Gold Vibe looks worth chancing to at least make the frame again in 2019.

He is yet to win at listed/group race level but has five times finished second to prove he does belong in the top league. He has also shown he can handle plenty of cut in the ground which will be important today, with four of those runners-up berths coming in testing conditions.

His record over this track is good too. Apart from his career best effort when chasing home Mabs Cross last year, he showed he is in good form when a close third in the prep race for this the Prix du Petit Couvert three weeks ago. With the slower ground expected to suit him better than the two that beat him that day, he looks worth a sporting each-way investment.

Longchamp 5.05: Glorious Journey

7f on soft ground brought about improvement for Glorious Journey last time and I am hoping similar conditions will take him to a first Group 1 prize this afternoon.

Sporting the old colours of Sheikh Mohammed, Glorious Journey took the premier 7f race in Britain for older horses, the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last time. Whilst it was not the hottest of Group 2 contests, the style of victory suggested this horse looks up to the highest level. With today’s race in mind he displayed plenty of tactical speed and is comfortable racing up with the pace in a race that might not be run at the strongest gallop.

He is clearly well regarded by Godolphin as he took his chance in the July Cup at Newmarket, but 6f on fast ground did not see him in the best light. He had already won comfortably on a slow surface on his only previous visit to France at Deauville last season. In an open affair there could be more to come from this unexposed 4yo.

Recommended bets:

0.5pts each-way – Gold Vibe – 4.30 Longchamp – 40/1 Bet365

1pt each-way – Glorious Journey – 5.05 Longchamp – 10/1 general
