Hong Kong racing icon retired following veterinary assessment
Romantic Warrior, the leading figure of Hong Kong racing in recent seasons, has been retired after further assessment of a problem with a front leg. The decision was taken by trainer Danny Shum in conjunction with owner Peter Lau Pak Fai and the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s veterinary team following diagnostic imaging at the Club’s veterinary hospital.
The Acclamation gelding, aged eight, leaves the track with an exceptional record. He won 24 of his 31 starts and amassed in excess of £28 million in prize-money, with 15 wins at the highest level. This season he remained unbeaten, recording four victories culminating in the Champions & Chater Cup at Sha Tin in May, a success that completed the Hong Kong Triple Crown and confirmed his place in the territory’s recent equine pantheon.

Veterinary staff at the Hong Kong Jockey Club had been monitoring one of Romantic Warrior’s front legs. Following further detailed imaging and assessment at the Club’s state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, the connections concluded that retirement was in the horse’s best interests rather than attempting further treatment and a return to competitive racing.
Plans for recovery and retirement
Romantic Warrior will remain under the Club’s care for a gradual transition from racing. He is to spend the next three months at Conghua Racecourse where the Club’s veterinarians will continue to monitor his condition before he moves to a permanent retirement home.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club will facilitate that move through its RESTART Racehorse Aftercare Programme, a scheme that provides structured rehabilitation and a holistic approach to life after racing for retired racehorses. The Club has also said it will stage a farewell ceremony for Romantic Warrior at a Sha Tin raceday later this season.
Legacy and international impact
Romantic Warrior’s achievements extended beyond Hong Kong. His Cox Plate victory in 2023 underlined his ability to perform on the international stage, and his narrow defeat in the 2025 Saudi Cup, where he finished a neck behind Japan’s Forever Young, was among a string of high-profile performances that raised his profile worldwide.
Within Hong Kong he became a defining figure for his connections and for local supporters, providing memorable performances at Sha Tin and other venues. His Triple Crown win further cemented his reputation as one of the territory’s standout performers of the era.
Although he will no longer compete, the careful veterinary oversight and the Club’s aftercare plans aim to ensure his welfare is maintained as he moves into retirement. The arrangements reflect an increasing emphasis in racing on post-career provision for high-profile athletes as well as everyday runners.
