Newbury selections Friday 28th November
Newbury’s big jumps meeting of the year starts off on Friday with some interesting contests. I have no strong opinion in the big Grade 2 Hurdle, so will instead concentrate on two tight handicaps either side of the feature. We had an excellent Saturday last weekend finding the 1-2 in the finale at Haydock through winner Top of the Bill (advised 33/1) and runner up advised each-way Saladins Son (SP 5/1). A win for Kabral Du Mathan (advised 13/8) further boosted coffers whilst JPR One (advised 9/2) was placed for the each-way bet.
Newbury 2.25: Filanderer
Two progressive second season chasers who like to race prominently are fancied here. However in receipt of 26lbs, FILANDERER makes more appeal than the mare Telepathique who has a huge burden of weight to carry.
Filanderer was lightly raced last season, but won his last three chases with increasing ease. His wins at Wincanton and Market Rasen came despite jumping continually jumping left on a right-handed track, but he looked far more at home at Ffos Las in April when storming home 10l clear of Boston Joe.
He showed his new mark of 112 to be woefully inadequate when winning at the same track by even further last month, and whilst the ground will be quicker today, he has plenty of good form on quicker going in the past. This does represent a big step up in grade, but he gets no weight to carry and could be up to this better class of race.
Newbury 3.35: JJ Moon
The step up to 3m should be greatly in the favour of JJ MOON and as he has eased in price this morning, he now looks solid each-way value.
There is no worries about fitness as he returned to the track this autumn with a win four weeks ago at Newton Abbot over 2m5f. As has become his style he hit a flat spot three out, before staying on in the straight to eventually wear down Ambion View. This more galloping track and extra 3f should see him to better effect again.
Last season 2m4f also looked a bear minimum for him, especially at Kempton where he almost collared Slipway on the line having looked in trouble turning for home. Whilst stable form this month has been a bit of a worry, most of Emma Lavelle’s horses this week have run well so I don’t see that as a reason to oppose him.
Recommended bets:
1pt win – Filanderer – 2.25 Newbury – 100/30 general
1pt each-way – JJ Moon – 3.35 Newbury – 13/2 general
