Derby pair among key entries for Great Voltigeur
The Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on Wednesday could provide a fresh chapter to this summer’s middle-distance story, with Epsom Derby winner Christmas Day and French Group 1 scorer Maltese Cross both on the list of 10 possibles.
Christmas Day, trained by Aidan O’Brien, beat Maltese Cross by a clear margin at Epsom. Maltese Cross, trained by William Haggas, has since returned to form in France, taking the Grand Prix de Paris by a narrow advantage. As Group 1 winners, both horses would carry a 5lb penalty for the Voltigeur, a weight hike Haggas has publicly described as severe.
For connections of Maltese Cross the Voltigeur represents a recognised trial ahead of potential autumn targets such as the St Leger or the Arc. Haggas has indicated the colt is well and adaptable regarding ground, making the York assignment feasible despite the penalty.
O’Brien contingent shapes the line-up
Aidan O’Brien has several entries, underscoring his ongoing involvement in shaping the three-year-old middle-distance division. Alongside Christmas Day, O’Brien has entered the King Edward VII Stakes winner Causeway, who failed to make an impact behind Maltese Cross in France; Action; Antigua; and the juvenile Group 1 winner Pierre Bonnard.
It would not be unfamiliar for O’Brien to run a Derby winner back in a Group 2 contest: similar tactics have been employed recently with other elite three-year-olds aimed at refining form and selecting autumn targets.

Haffner was a narrow second in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, an encouraging run that recommends him to Acomb scouts. Confucius arrives on the back of a sequence of defeats from favouritism, while Giant Sequoia remains a colt of interest following a promising introduction.
Other notable Acomb entries include Charlie Appleby’s Nabati, Ed Walker’s Alfred Wallace and Andrew Balding’s Gentle Hurricane, the latter on just one start to date.
