York welcomes the Ebor with a competitive opening card

The Ebor Festival returns to York this week for four days of high-class Flat racing. The meeting opens with a mixture of valuable handicaps and pattern races that provide plenty for racegoers and festival visitors to savour. Below are three runners highlighted for the opening day, all representing different strands of the meeting — a high-value sprint handicap, a two-year-old pattern test and another hot handicap to close the card.

1.50 Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap — The Man (Richard Spencer)

Richard Spencer’s charge is named among the leading contenders for the opening handicap. The Man has previously shown an affinity with York, including a victory on the Knavesmire in May 2025 and a close second in this race the previous year off a mark of 92. He returned from a winter spell in Dubai and has had a couple of starts in preparation for this meeting, reportedly shaping with credit on both occasions.

Spencer has enjoyed a strong season in valuable sprint handicaps and the gelding arrives here with the benefit of recent racecourse activity. Connections appear to have aimed him at this part of the season and his positivity for the track suggests he will be popular with handicappers who favour proven York form.

2.25 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (Listed) — Alfred Wallace (Ed Walker)

The Acomb is the first of several two-year-old pattern contests across the week and this year’s renewal includes Alfred Wallace, trained by Ed Walker. A son of Dubawi out of Snow Lantern, he carries a pedigree that implies high-class potential. He picked up a win at Thirsk in May before stepping up in company for the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket, where he ran prominently for a long way but weakened late after setting the pace.

Connections altered tactics subsequently, running him over an extended seven furlongs in the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot. Dropped off the pace and ridden more patiently, he recovered from trouble in running to register a strong performance, suggesting that a more settled ride unlocks improvement. With a pattern-race test at York likely to suit his profile, he looks one of the juveniles to monitor on day one.

4.45 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap — Underwriter (Michael Keady)

The evening’s feature handicap is a typically congested sprint and Michael Keady’s Underwriter is a contender of interest. Bought by his current connections for a modest 4,600gns in a Tattersalls online sale in early July, he has made encouraging progress since changing hands.

His first start for the yard hinted at ability and his most recent outing in a valuable Ascot sprint was eye-catching. Held up and squeezed back into a difficult position inside the final furlong, he produced a sharp late run and was closing rapidly — an effort that suggested he would have finished even closer with a stride or two more. The handicapper has eased his mark from a previous high of 92, which places him in an attractive band for this heat if he can replicate that late acceleration.

What to expect on the opening day

York’s opening card traditionally blends high-class pattern races for younger and older horses with testing, competitive handicaps. Form formbook knowledge, especially at this venue, can prove decisive — York tends to reward established course performers while two-year-old races often reveal a useful juvenile for the remainder of the season.

Racegoers and festival visitors should expect close finishes and a lively atmosphere as the meeting kicks off. With the Juddmonte International looming later in the week, the opening day sets the tone and provides a number of interesting storylines to follow across the festival.
