Aventure delivers Group One success as Diamond Necklace suffers first defeat
Aventure produced a telling performance to beat Diamond Necklace in the Sumbe Prix Jean et Louis Romanet at Deauville, handing the Aidan O’Brien-trained star her first career defeat and confirming the Christophe Ferland-trained mare remains a top-level operator.
The victory added another Group One to Aventure’s record after her success in last year’s Prix Vermeille and marked a valuable season highlight for connections. Ridden by Maxime Guyon, the five-year-old showed a blend of speed and racecraft to prevail over 10 furlongs, while Diamond Necklace, unbeaten in six previous starts including the Prix Marcel Boussac, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Prix de Diane, was unable to find an answer to the winner’s experience.
Plans now focused on 10 furlongs and big autumn targets
Following the race, Aventure’s team indicated the mare will remain at 10 furlongs for the near future. Pierre-Yves Bureau, racing manager for owners the Wertheimer brothers, said she had been well prepared for the contest and that connections believe 10 furlongs is her ideal trip at present. Plans discussed include a start in the Prix de l’Opéra on Arc day, with a possible trip to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland under consideration if all goes well.
Bureau also referenced previous tactical decisions this season, noting an attempt at a longer trip in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud had not worked out as hoped. The team remain appreciative of her qualities and suggested they will enjoy her racing career while also mindful of her future as a broodmare.
Diamond Necklace to be assessed for stamina test
Diamond Necklace’s handler, Aidan O’Brien, reported satisfaction with the filly’s performance overall but acknowledged the winner was superior on the day. O’Brien indicated the ground had not been a concern and that the filly would return to Ireland for assessment. He did not rule out a step up in trip later in the season, with 2,400 metres (a mile and a half) mentioned as a possibility for autumn targets.
The defeat represents the first reverse for Diamond Necklace after a stellar juvenile and three-year-old campaign, and connections will now weigh whether longer distances could unlock further improvement.
Eye-catching effort from Timeforshowcasing
Charlie Johnston’s Timeforshowcasing ran a strong race to take third, closing well under Jack Mitchell. The filly has been campaigned extensively this season and produced another progressive showing against elite opposition.
Johnston flagged the importance of underfoot conditions to his filly’s form, pointing to her best performances on good or softer ground this year, which include victories at Listed and Group Two level plus placings in two Group Ones. He suggested the latest run was another step forward and predicted she will be afforded greater respect in future assignments.

Diamond Necklace’s connections will consider whether a move to 2,400m could be the next logical step, which would have implications for entries at top UK and Irish meetings and the end-of-season championships.
