Libertango leads a competitive Lowther line-up
George Boughey has confirmed Libertango will be aimed at the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York, confident that the Knavesmire’s flat straight will suit the rapid No Nay Never filly better than some of her recent assignments.
Libertango arrived late at Royal Ascot but produced a strong finishing effort to prevail in the Albany Stakes. That form received further validation when the runner-up from that Ascot contest later struck at Group One level.
Her most recent start saw Libertango beaten in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket, a track Boughey feels may not have been ideal for the filly’s characteristics. With that in mind, connections have opted for a return to a simpler, flatter six-furlong test at York.
Trainer’s assessment
Boughey reports the filly is working well at home and believes the Lowther will provide a clearer platform to showcase her speed. He described Libertango as a speedy juvenile still developing with experience, and suggested a straightforward track could bring out her best.
Other notable entries
The Lowther has attracted a number of promising juveniles from Ireland and Britain, several of whom arrive on the back of impressive recent performances.
- Star Of State– Trained by Joseph O’Brien, the State Of Rest filly steps up to Pattern company after a commanding nine-length success in a Leopardstown maiden. That display prompted her connections to supplement her for York.
- Livenka– A Ger Lyons-trained Bated Breath filly, Livenka finished ahead of Star Of State on debut and followed up with a decisive success in the Ballyhane Stakes at Naas. Colin Keane, who will take the ride at York, has spoken positively of her progression.
- Wild Blossom– Karl Burke’s filly arrives from Goodwood, where she won a valuable conditions event. York will represent her first try at six furlongs.
- Moonrise– Trained by Andrew Balding, Moonrise carries the formline of a previous Group Three success, having won the Princess Margaret Stakes on her latest outing.
What the race could tell connections
For several of these juveniles, the Lowther will be an important step in assessing their suitability for top-level racing. It offers a clear test of innate speed over six furlongs on a course that typically favours straight-track specialists. Performances here will influence plans for the remainder of the autumn and beyond, including potential Group assignments.
With a mixture of proven pattern performers and promising improvers, the contest promises to be a useful gauge of the 2026 juvenile filly crop as the season moves into the later summer festivals.
Racegoer notes
- York’s straight six is likely to suit a filly with a strong turn of foot and those who handle a flat track.
- Connections appear keen to target the race as a stepping stone to further Pattern opportunities for successful runners.
The Sky Bet Lowther Stakes remains one of the key juvenile sprints on the late-summer calendar, offering a revealing contest for those aiming for the top level in the fillies’ sprint division.
