Kingsclere assess next steps for Item after York success
Juddmonte’s Frankel colt Item, fresh from his dramatic win in the Juddmonte International at York, will have his autumn campaign shaped largely by ground conditions, trainer Andrew Balding has indicated.
Item produced a stirring performance to prevail in a close finish on his latest start at the Knavesmire, a victory that completed a treble of successes for the colt at the York track. Balding confirmed connections have shortlisted top-level targets but that the surface will influence the final plan.
Choices narrowed to major international targets
Balding revealed that the team are considering both the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as possible next ports of call for Item. He emphasised that whether the colt lines up at Leopardstown or heads to Longchamp will depend on how the ground plays at the times of those races.
The emphasis on underfoot conditions is not unusual for horses campaigning at the highest level late in the season, when rain and cooler temperatures can materially alter turf on both sides of the Irish Sea and on the Continent. Item’s York performance, executed from a pocket before delivering a strong finish, reinforced the colt’s credentials at pattern-race level and underlined his adaptability on the Knavesmire.
Kalpana to be given a break after another big-race success
Balding also reflected on the performance of stablemate Kalpana, who followed up a previous Group 1 victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes by adding the Yorkshire Oaks to her record with a determined display at York.
The trainer described Kalpana as a high-class filly who will now be afforded a spell away from racing while connections consider her next steps. No immediate target was declared, with the team preferring to assess her following a period of rest.
York week a highlight but title push unlikely
While Kingsclere enjoyed a rewarding week at York, Balding was candid about the stable’s prospects in the trainers’ championship. He said the yard does not have the depth of runners to mount a sustained challenge to the leading contender and that several of their more valuable horses are being aimed at targets abroad.
As a result, a concerted push for the trainers’ crown is not expected to be a priority. Instead, the focus will remain on placing individual horses at the right meetings and on the right ground to maximise their chances at the highest level.
