Blue Bolt completes Deauville double with late surge
Blue Bolt added a Prix Rothschild to an already impressive seasonal ledger as the four-year-old rallied late to overhaul Precise at Deauville. Ridden by Colin Keane, the Andrew Balding-trained filly produced her trademark finishing kick to register another top-level victory and underline her progression through 2024.
Progression from Listed to Group 1
After ending last season as runner-up in the Sun Chariot at Newmarket, Blue Bolt has built on that form this year. Her campaign features a Listed success at Goodwood followed by Group-level wins in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, and the Prix Rothschild represents the latest step up the ladder.
Keane timed the move to decisive effect in the closing stages at Deauville, with Blue Bolt lunging past Precise to secure what was her seventh victory from ten career starts. Sir Mark Prescott’s Moon Target completed the frame in third, improving on her Coronation Stakes run.
A high-class contest
The race pitched Blue Bolt against a familiar rival in Precise, trained by Aidan O’Brien and notable for her earlier-season wins in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. Ryan Moore partnered Precise in the rematch, but it was Blue Bolt who produced the clearest late response, emphasising the daughter of quality and stamina her trainer has highlighted this season.
Balding has spoken of the filly’s physical strength and determination, and connections point to effective handling at home — with Alfie Redman credited for the daily work that helps to keep Blue Bolt focused and manageable, a valuable attribute for a horse with a progressive profile through the summer.
Targets turning towards Leopardstown
With the Prix Rothschild secured, Blue Bolt now appears set to aim at further Group 1 targets in the autumn. Her team have their eyes on the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown in September, a race seen as a natural next objective given her adaptability to different ground conditions.
The confirmation that she handles a range of going types is particularly useful when mapping a campaign that could include trips between Britain and Ireland.
